Camera Obscura

An ancient technique, Camera Obscura was used centuries before the development of the camera as a means to project an exterior scene through a small hole in a wall to the opposite side of the interior room using only light. Scientists could watch an eclipse this way, people could use it to copy scenes for illustrations or paintings. Camera obscuras were popular in the Victorian Era and many were found at popular seaside resorts. Very few remain.

There was no actual camera involved, with the advent of photography the use of, and interest in, camera obscura faded. I am fascinated by the technique. Most often I do it in a fixed location, a home or business. My husband, John Colantuono, and I and worked together to create a moveable tented camera obscura that we have set up at various locations.
